Youth Site Coordinator Manual
First Edition, 2011
Who is this manual for?
We’ve made a youth-friendly manual intended for use by youth leaders – such as environmental, science and green clubs at high schools, scout and guide groups, or any other young adults who are passionate about making a difference to the health of our shorelines.
You’ll need:
- A youth leader crew of 4 people (recommended minimum) or more – you can certainly do this with less people it just means more responsibilities for each person.
- For liability purposes, you will need someone over the age of 19 to help out – you’ll need them to handle the online registration of your cleanup site and to be there to ‘supervise’ on the day.
There are two parts to this manual:
1. Production Manual
The Production Manual provides you with the ABC’s on how to run a shoreline cleanup.
2. Bonus Features
The Bonus Features contains ideas to help your group motivate, advertise, recruit and fundraise for your cleanup.

One year, participants found an 18k gold ring during a cleanup in Ontario. Last year, RCMP divers removed a submerged car from a river in Surrey. It had been reported stolen two years previous.
